Integrationskurse

The Integrationskurs is the primary course offered for learning the German language.

It consists of a language course and an orientation course. The language course lasts 600 teaching units in the general Integrationskurs, up to 900 teaching units in the special courses and 400 teaching units in the intensive course.

In the language course you will learn German and deal with important everyday topics, for example

  • Shopping,
  • living,
  • work and career,
  • health and
  • leisure time.

The language course concludes with the “Deutschtest für Zuwanderer” (DTZ A2/B1) exam with the goal of B1.

If you are taking a literacy integration course or a low-literacy integration course and do not pass the exam with a grade of B1, you can repeat 300 lessons and retake the exam once.

In 100 teaching units, the orientation course teaches you about the basic values of society, the political system, culture and history of Germany. This is followed by the “Leben in Deutschland” (LiD) test. Upon successful completion of the “Leben in Deutschland” test and the language course with an overall result of B1, you will receive the “Integrationskurs Zertifikat”.
This certifies that you have sufficient knowledge of German and basic knowledge of the German legal and social system and living conditions in Germany.

Berufssprachkurse

The Berufssprachkurse (BSK) prepare you for the world of work with job-related German lessons. In addition to general Berufssprachkurse with the target language level A2 to C2, there are also specialist language courses, courses specifically in the context of professional recognition procedures in the field of academic medical professions and healthcare professions, as well as courses specifically for trainees (Azubi-BSK) and employees (Job-BSK).

You meet the requirements for participating in a Berufssprachkurs if you are an immigrant, an EU citizen or a German citizen with a history of immigration and

  • are looking for training
  • are registered as unemployed or looking for work and/or
  • need further language training for your profession or for professional recognition.

In order to participate in a course with target language level A2 and B1, you must also have already completed an Integrationskurs.

If you have the status of a Duldung nach §4 Abs. 1 Satz 2 Nr. 3 and do not have access to Integrationskurse, you can generally participate directly in a Berufssprachkurs with the target language level A2 or B1 after at least 6 months of tolerated stay have elapsed.

To take part in a Berufssprachkurs in accordance with §45a AufenthG, you need an authorization to participate.

the job center/employment agency responsible for you is the office that can issue you with a participation permit.

Get in touch with your contact person at the job center/employment agency.

Discuss whether participation in a vocational language course is necessary and useful for your career path.

Then apply directly to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) for authorization to participate.

EOK / STAFF German courses

In EOK and STAFF German courses as an introductory and orientation offer, you will receive information in 300 or 400 teaching units about living together in Germany and about important everyday topics, such as

  • Health and medical care,
  • transportation and mobility,
  • work,
  • social contacts.

In the EOK and STAFF German courses, you will learn the German language so that you can communicate independently in everyday life and find your way around.
EOK and STAFF German courses end with an exam (A1, A2, A2-B1).

You may take part in EOK and STAFF German courses if

  • you have immigrated to Germany or have fled to Germany and
  • live in Schleswig-Holstein and
  • do not have to go to school (are not of compulsory school age) and
  • if you are not (yet) able to take part in an integration course.

As soon as you receive a place on an integration course, you must leave the EOK or STAFF German course.

Courses with child supervision

MiA courses

MiA (Migrantinnen einfach stark im Alltag, or “Migrant women strong in everyday life”) are free courses for women who support each other and learn new things.

The courses take place in classrooms, often with childcare, and there is a course instructor.

Participants can improve their German, exchange ideas, talk about topics that are important to them, and learn more about life in Germany (e.g., childcare, school, professions). The course content is tailored to the participants.

Excursions are also organized, and there are other activities such as singing, painting, or sewing.

A course lasts 34 hours and runs over several months or weeks. Participants may take three courses in a row.

Women who are at least 16 years old are eligible to participate. They must not have obtained a school or vocational qualification in Germany. In addition, you must belong to one of the following three groups:

  • You have recently immigrated or have been living in Germany for some time but do not have German citizenship. You have permission to remain in Germany permanently (§44 (1) sentence 2 AufenthG or §24 AufenthG. Women from some European countries, the USA, Canada, and Australia are not eligible to participate. Your course provider will provide you with further information).
  • You are seeking asylum.
  • You have a so-called “Ausbildungsduldung” (training permit) or “Beschäftigungsduldung” (employment permit) (Section 60c (1) of the Residence Act (AufenthG) or Section 60d (1) of the Residence Act (AufenthG)).

“Mama lernt Deutsch” courses

“Mama lernt Deutsch” (Mum learns German) is a free, low-threshold language learning programme with childcare for mothers with children and women. In the courses, women and their children can learn German and network. The aim of the courses is to enable women to participate in society, learn German and prepare for integration courses or other further language courses. Participants can join the courses at any time.

The offer is aimed at mothers with children and women who have little or no knowledge of German.

There are currently courses available in Lübeck and Flensburg.

Language training for work and Ausbildung

The advisory networks B.O.A.T. and Alle an Bord! offer labor market-related language training with 2 teaching units per week on site and online. They prepare you for the job market and support you if you are already in work or training. The language training courses are not a substitute for the Integrationskurs or Berufssprachkurs.

Einbürgerungstest

The examination center of the Landesverband der Volkshochschulen Schleswig-Holsteins e.V. informs you about the Einbürgerungstest (EBT). With the Einbürgerungstest, you demonstrate basic knowledge of the legal and social order and living conditions in Germany. This is important if you wish to obtain a permanent right of residence (settlement permit) or German Einbürgerungstest.
